In the 1820s, galena ore became the focus of the first major mineral rush in the United States. By the end of the 1820s, the city of Galena rivaled Chicago in size. When the search for lead moved to other parts of the state, fluorite was discovered. Lead, zinc, and fluorite all formed in a similar fashion during the Permian Period, about ...
Galena was an important mineral resource in Illinois during the nineteenth century and during the first half of the twentieth century. It was mined in northwestern and extreme southern Illinois. Galena can be found in small voids within limestones and dolomites and as crystals in geodes.
Galena is in the northeast part of the state. It is about 100 miles from the Idaho state line and the same distance from the Washington state line. It was probably named Galena because it was near a large body of lead sulfide (galena). It is in Grant County which was named after U.S. Grant. The post office closed in 1943. Pennsylvania

May 01, 2014 Galena deposits are found in the US, UK, British Columbia, Germany and Australia. Two US states recognise galena as their state mineral, and a former mining town in Kansas took the name of the rock. Silver mining from galena ore occurs elsewhere in the US. Pyrite Pyrite, often known as fools gold, can be one of the most dangerous minerals.
State Mineral Galena (PbS) The proposal to make galena (lead sulfide) the state mineral was introduced by the Kenosha Gem and Mineral Society to promote geologic awareness. Galena was chosen for its abundance, uniqueness, economic value, historical significance, and native nature. This designation was officially bestowed upon the mineral in 1971.
Hundreds of mines of all sizes are known from the district. Many were small shallow diggings. The Wisconsin state mascot, the badger, is a reference to the miners and their numerous badger holes. Also in commemoration of this phase of Wisconsins history, galena has been chosen as Wisconsins state mineral.
Galena was made the official state mineral and red granite the state rock in 1971. The proposal was introduced at the request of the Kenosha Gem and Mineral Society to promote geological awareness. Galena met the criteria for selection, as set by the Wisconsin Geological Society, including abundance, uniqueness, economic value, historical ...
Galena with Sphalerite. specimen number 3831490. location Picher field, Tri-State District, Oklahoma, USA. description Bright lustrous sharp crystals of galena to 1.5 cm on edge scattered throughout a chert matrix with sparkling black to red micro crystals of sphalerite. Sep 14, 2021 Galena is a lead sulfide mineral with a chemical composition of PbS. It is one of the earliest minerals used by humans. It is also an ore of lead metal and is mined from a large number of deposits in many countries. Galena mineral is
Galena is the most important ore of lead, is often associated with silver minerals, and has been mined for at least 2000 years. It is found in hydrothermal veins and Mississippi Valley type deposits (MVT). Galena is a rare mineral in some granitic pegmatites. It is also found in the contact metamorphic skarn deposits.
CWC69 Galena. Tri-state District, Oklahoma, United States (pre-1967) 9.7x 4.7x 3.6 cm. $58. A galena cube on a nicely contrasting chert matrix, from the Tri-Satate district. I like these better than the more contemporary Viburnum Trend specmens, because the chert matrixes tend to give the pieces a much cleaner appearance than the messy breccia ...
An impressive example of a Tri-State classic, of very sharp modified galena cubes piled up on a striking box-work matrix. The splendent crystals measure to 2.5 cm. The galenas are preferentially peppered with tiny, glittery pyrite cubes and the ruby-jack sphalerite is very gemmy.

For example, the combination of lead and sulfur forms a sulfide mineral called galena. Many of the sulfide minerals are valuable ores, such as galena and sphalerite, the sulfide minerals that produce lead and zinc ore. In Kansas, many of the sulfide minerals are found in the southeastern corner of the state. Galena (hardness 2 1/2)
Nov 18, 2019 Galena definition is - a bluish-gray cubic mineral with metallic luster consisting of lead sulfide and constituting the principal ore of lead.
Minerals with a hardness of less than about 7 will leave a streak on the plate. The color of a streak, which can be a different color than the mineral, helps identify the mineral. Galena, which is lead gray, leaves a lead gray to black streak. Hematite, an iron ore mineral that may be black or gray, leaves a reddish brown streak.
Missouri State Mineral Galena. Galena is the primary ore mineral of Lead. Worked for its lead content as early as 3000BC, it is found in ore veins with Sphalerite, Pyrite and/or Chalcopyrite, and in Sedimentary rocks as beds or impregmentations.
Wisconsin State Mineral Galena (Lead sulfide) (Lead Sulphide) Adopted on March 9, 1971. The state mineral became Galena at the same time red granite became the state rock, thanks to the proposal put fourth by the Kenosha Gem and Mineral Society in 1971. They wanted to promote awareness of Wisconsins geology.
Argentiferous Galena also occurs in Silverton, Ouray Co., Colorado. Classic Galena specimens were found in the old zinc mines in Wurtsboro, Sullivan Co., New York. Large amounts of Galena are mined industrially for lead in southwestern Wisconsin, specifically at Shullsburg, Lafayette Co., Wisconsin.
Missouris State Mineral. On July 21, 1967, the mineral galena was adopted as the official mineral of Missouri. Galena is the major source of lead ore, and the recognition of this mineral by the state legislature was to emphasize Missouris status as the nations top producer of lead. Galena is dark gray in color and breaks into small cubes.
It is about 100 miles from the Idaho state line and the same distance from the Washington state line. It was probably named Galena because it was near a large body of lead sulfide (galena). It is in Grant County which was named after U.S. Grant.
Jun 26, 2021 Old Mines Calcite, Galena, Pyrite, Quartz Missouri is home to one of the most mineral rich areas in the entire world. The Ozarks are absolutely loaded with commercial minerals and the many large mines and quarries in the area are a testament to that fact.

Sep 22, 2021 This is very interesting. I have a large specimen of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and dolomite that was labeled Eagle Picher Mine, Ottawa County, OK. This is in the Tri-State area. The dolomite appears very white and rhomb-like. However, the sphalerite crystals are large. Could this be the wrong location?
Galena Meanings, Zodiacs, Planets, Elements, Colors, Chakras, and more. Science Origin of GalenaGalena is a lead sulfide mineral that crystallizes in the form of masses, cubes, octahedrons, and fibrous layers. Today, its the most important lead ore when it comes to the production of goods. This mineral was first described back in 77 A.D. by Gaius Plinius
Aug 13, 2007 In 1967, hematite was designated the official state mineral by the Alabama legislature. Galena. Galena (lead sulfide) and the closely related sphalerite (zinc sulfide) occur sporadically in limestones and dolomites in the Valley and Ridge section of Calhoun County. These minerals were mined for their lead content on a small scale in the county ...
The Galena crystals show an unusual prismatic habit and exhibit a melted look as they rise above the large flat mother crystal. The edges of some of the Galena crystals are smooth and not angular with hollows and skeletal growth. The larger Galena crystal is 2.5cm and Galena cluster on the opposite side is 1.5cm.
